Hot Thoughts on H2O (Water)

How many ounces, cups or bottles of water have you drunk today?  This can sound to be a curious question, though its importance may be monumental in the progression of your health.  Did you know that both caffeinated & alcoholic drinks have more of a dehydrating effect that the addition of water in the human body?  Imagine how much of our human population across this planet can be in the “dehydrated” category with this knowledge.

F. Batmanghelidj, MD has written a multitude of books associated with water (including “Water Cure”) and claims that dehydration impacts four major functions of the body ultimately rendering it weaker and more susceptible to diseases and cancers. Dr. Batmanghelidj shares the following ideas:

  • Renders the immune system ineffective and unresponsive
  • Causes the destruction of some primary amino acids into antioxidants when toxic waste builds up in the body.  Some of these sacrificed amino acids are involved in the enzyme systems that recognize and repair the genetic damage and incorrect DNA transcriptions.
  • Loss of essential amino acids and elements force the cells to lose specialization of cell-specific abilities: the drought environment forces cell to become primitive with self-replicating properties to focus on survival mechanisms.
  • Dehydration will also cause low-oxygen and high acidity environments that are more suited for cancer cell development than the original normal tissues.

Consuming Your Water Daily

Water is truly hydrating – fresh squeezed juices (green, vegetable or fruit) are the best alternative to water.  Bottled juices, generally with higher levels of sugar, may be another option in cases of manual juicing deficiency.  Non-caffeinated teas (ie. chamomile, peppermint, licorice, anise, mullein, damiana) are excellent and may provide other therapeutic responses for the consumer.  Fresh fruits and vegetables will too provide life-supporting H2O into your physiology, along with other nutritive enzymes, vitamins, bioflavonoids, fiber and flavor to name a list of goodies.

Essentials of Rehydration
1) Drink enough to equal ½ your body weight (lbs) in ounces, daily. Ie. 200 pounds = 100 ounces of water/day
2) Use ¼ tsp. of Himayalan Rock Salt for every quart of water you drink.  Use natural salt generously with food, as long as you drink enough water. (Note: 1 quart = 4 cups = 32 oz.)
3) Avoid diuretics, such as caffeinated or alcoholic drinks.  Every six oz. of caffeine or alcohol requires an additional 10 to 12 oz. of water to rehydrate you. (Another reference states 8 oz. water for each oz of alcohol)

Original table adopted from Reference #1 (page 18)

Consider one sip of water, one ounce of fluid!  This suggests that a 150 pound individual should drink 75 ounces or slightly over 9 cups (72 ounces) each day to maintain hydration.

How To Drink Your Water

Most people are not yet aware about the relationship between importance of time and duration of drinking water.  An individual must spread out their daily consumption of recommended water throughout the day as the kidneys, intestines and body can absorb a ceiling of about 1 to 1.5L of water per hour.  Consuming too much water at too quick a pace risks throwing off the body’s electrolytes (and can be dangerous!) and will eliminate water which cannot be absorbed quickly enough through the body.  Imagine this danger being actualized through “water chugging” contests or simply trying to drink the day’s recommended levels in 15 minutes.

When discussing the timing of our water consumption, it’s highly recommended to drink your daily allotment of water outside of the meal window.  This time window should approximate at least 15-20 minutes before or 1-3 hours after food.  Why?  Water can dilute both a person’s digestive enzymes, and the acid in their stomach.  This can lead in incomplete absorption of food, indigestion or a longer digestion response.  In practicality, for patients whom only drink water with a meal, these patients should choose to drink water with food over as opposed to not drinking enough water over the course of a day.  Also, suggest a new practice of drinking room temperature water (or lukewarm) as this will prevent the slow-down of the digestion processes.  Cold water is an acceptable practice… however ice water will shock the stomach preventing the release of digestive enzyme while heat is produced to neutralize the icy temperatures.

Here’s an interesting theory Dr. Batmanghelidj shares which may correlate with a lot of truth for some individuals.  Two major types of fluid which water contributes to in the body: intracellular (inside the cells – ICF) & extracellular (surrounding the cells – ECF).  Water is used to hydrate the cells and wash away toxins and waste products developed from normal cell metabolism.  Water is held inside of cells through its potassium – the electrolyte concentration of the ECF is said to be similar to that of the salinity of the ocean.  Balance and health is achieved through appropriate intake of water, potassium and salt.  When there is insufficient water to reach the cells, water is drawn from ECF.  This is the first stage of dehydration which causes edema as the brain will command an increase of salt to retain more water in the ECF.  When the shortage of water becomes for intensive, the body increases osmotic pressure in order to deliver more water to the cells, leading to hypertension.  Reading this previous statement is recognition of one manifestation of the disease – hypertension is a silent killer and an ailment which in most cases takes considerable time to develop!

Himayalan Rock Salt

The Himalayan Rock Salt is so named because of its occurrence in the Himalayan Mountains. It contains 10 different types of minerals & 84 trace elements which are important for human body. There are different types of salt present on the earth like standard salt, refined salt, and cooking salt & Himalayan Rock Salt. The Himalayan rock salt is mainly mined in the Khewra mine in Pakistan, which is the largest salt mine in the world.

Qualities of Himalayan Rock Salt

The Himalayan Rock Salt is the purest salt available on Earth. Himalayan Rock Salt is beneficial for human health and because of its health benefits it is used all over in the world. Naturally it is present in the form of small rock which is white-pink or sometime red in color which becomes white after the conversion of rock in to the powder form. The color difference is due to mineral contents and the iron level present in the salt. Minerals inside of this unrefined gift are necessary for the body to transmit an electric potential to occur at the membrane wall of cells allowing energy to release.

Health Benefits of Himalayan Rock Salts

  1. Crystal salt regulates the water content in your body.
  2. Ability to maintain the pH in the cells, mainly in the brain cells.
  3. Can help in reducing the signs of aging and be helpful for limiting progression of skin diseases (ie. Psoriasis, eczema).
  4. May assist patients with diabetes in maintaining the blood sugar level.
  5. Responsible for the generation of hydroelectric energy in the cells of body.
  6. The absorption of food from the walls of intestine can also be facilitated by the Himalayan rock salt.
  7. The respiratory health can also be improved in the patients suffering from the respiratory diseases.
  8. Sinus problems can also be reduced with the help of Himalayan rock salt (neti-pot).
  9. It has also been observed that the Himalayan rock salt may be responsible for increased libido in both men and women.
  10. The muscle cramps can be prevented with the use of this salt.
  11. The blood pressure is regulated by this salt when it is used in conjugation with water (may ameliorate some negative effects of high NaCl)
  12. Natural powerful antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-fungal agent – supportive of health & suppressing infective diseases.

Comparison of Himalayan Rock Salt vs Sea Salt

The sea salt is obtained by evaporating sea water. The sea salt is not pure any more as the seas are dumped with waste products and oil spills. The salt obtained from the polluted sea water contains mercury, PCBs and other toxins.

While the Himalayan rock salt is in pure crystalized form with lots of health benefits. As it is obtained by mining, it is in pure form without any toxins.

Discussion of Sodium Chloride (NaCl) – America’s “Salt”

Sodium Chloride (NaCl) is a chemically refined version of what nature perfected. When ingested, NaCl is missing the natural equalizing counterparts including potassium, calcium, magnesium – each of which are naturally in far lower concentrations in the natural form of salt.

NaCl is recognized as an aggressive intracellular poison – for each .035 ounces it takes 23 times the amount of its own cellular water to neutralize & eliminate NaCl.  Average daily salt consumed in the U.S. is between 0.4 – 0.7 ounces and our bodies can excrete 0.17 – 0.25 ounces each day.  Uric acid can bind to excess NaCl in the body which can cause different kinds of rheumatism such as arthritis, gout, kidney and gall bladder stones in attempts to “eliminate” this substance.

Often, table salt can have iodine or fluoride artificially added.  In addition, frequently preservatives are added to salt… this does not make sense as salt itself is a preservative.  These salt preservatives may include calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate & aluminium hydroxide (aluminum is suspected to increase Alzheimer’s risk).

Uses of the Himalayan rock salt

The Himalayan Rock Salt can be used as follows:

  1. Directly by seasoning food. Use this as an additive instead of NaCl to minimize some of the damage done from processed, refined foods.
  2. Making sole brine by mixing the salt in water by making 26% concentration of the brine. Allow salt crystals to naturally dissolve in time – at equilibrium it becomes 26%. This brine can be taken as one teaspoon full daily.
  3. To avoid the salty taste of brine, the brine can also be intake by mixing the teaspoon full brine in 1 liter of water and drink the whole amount of water.
  4. The salt mixed with hot water can be used to treat sinus, pain, injuries, cuts, gargles and as skin scrub. Try a nice soaking bath using 1 kg of salt!
  5. The Himalayan rock salt lamps can be used to refresh the indoor air and improve the ambience of a place.
  6. Added to Dr. Bragg’s Raw Apple Cider Vinegar with raw honey & water for a healthy, cleansing drink (try substituting water with club soda for a treat!)
  7. Sole Inhalation (1-8%) – Add 0.7 ounces of crushed crystal salt into a steaming pot of water. Inhale the sole steam for 10-15 minutes – organs will bind pollutants in mucous so gunk may be coughed up.
  8. Gargle & spit sole solution upon onset of sore throat for speedy recovery.
  9. Use a 1% solution as an eye bath or a sinus flush (ie. “Neti-pot”).
  10. Topical sole solutions may be beneficial in open wounds (use 1% to avoid stinging), poison oak, ivy & sumac.

Warning

People suffering from severe ailments like kidney disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, digestive disorders etc. should consult their doctors before consuming the Himalayan Rock Salt as it can have adverse effect on health of the patients.

Facts YOU May Not Know About Nootropics…

You may have come across the word Nootropics but you probably thought it was either a misspelling or another of those out-dated post 18th Century English words.

What exactly are Nootropics?

These are drugs, nutraceuticals, supplements and some functional foods believed to enhance the common and main functions of the brain such as intelligence, memory, motivation, attention, cognition and concentration. They are also commonly referred to as Smart drugs, cognitive enhancers and memory enhancers within the medical discipline. The word nootropics itself is derived from 2 words combined to mean – Twisting of the mind.

How do nootropics work?

Performance of the brain is usually affected by:

  • Availability of  neurochemicals
    • Neurotransmitters
    • Hormones
    • Enzymes
  • Availability of oxygen.
  • Absence of disease and any pre-existing conditions.

Scientists have not yet revealed the effectiveness levels of nootropics but believe that they work by varying the supply of neurochemicals to the brain, enhancing the brain’s supply of oxygen or accelerating the growth of nerves and by extension, enhancing nerve activity. The effect of nootropics to the cognition and intelligence functions of the mind is hard to conclusively determine, as these 2 functions are not readily quantifiable.

Application of Nootropics

Nootropics are mainly used enhance the cognitive functions (Concentration and memory) of the brain. Loss of cognitive functions is usually experienced by patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and ADHD. Drugs and substances used as nootropics are mostly used by patients of the mentioned diseases to counter cognitive difficulties.

Some types of nootropics that exist available for consumption include:

  • Modafinil
  • Methylphenidate
  • Piracetam

Modafinil & Methylphenidate are both prescription drugs in the United States under brand names Provigil & Concerta respectively.  Both of these prescription nootropics will not be discussed in greater details as they are not readily available without prescription – if any interest in these, consult your MD :-)

Piracetam is one nootropic the author has had personal experience with – the experience has been positive.

After two one-month trials ranging from 1000-3000 mg/day in 1-3 divided doses, subjectively memory seemed to improve. Data & conversations including names seemed to register easier & more completely.  Piracetam seems to have a self regulating effective dose – at about 800-1200 mg 2x/day, my cognitive awareness seemed to receive its maximum effectiveness.

Piracetam:

This is a nootropic drug found in several drug stores but exists under several brand names. It is used for medicinal purposes as may be prescribed by a doctor. It is usually used by aged patients who have developed cognitive impairments, with positive results confirmed.

Use of Piracetam is believed to achieve the following:

  • Enhance cognitive functions in children with dyslexia, though it does not necessarily treat the cause of the condition.
  • Stop/slow brain damage that may be caused by hypoxia or excessive intake of alcohol.
  • Treatment and management of post-stroke aphasia.
  • Manage the after cognitive effects caused by epilepsy.
  • Treat and manage reduced cognitive functions following surgeries of the heart or brain.
  • Manage dementia.
  • Manage myoclonus.
  • Manage sickle cell anaemia.

The above are not the only functions as applied when using piracetam as a nootropic as more functions continue to emerge with more research.

Piracetam enhances neuronal and vascular functions, without necessarily playing the role of a stimulant or sedative. It acts on ion carriers, improving neuron sensitivity. Piracetam also increases the flow of blood and absorption of oxygen in the brain tissues, while exhibiting low toxicity. A regimen taken for 2 weeks has been found to improve verbal memory and continues to be used popularly among students as a cognitive enhancer.

Application of Piracetam is mostly in 800mg tablets or capsules while in other instances, it is supplied the form of powder. However, dosage may vary depending indication by a health-care professional. The dosage may range from 1-2 pills taken on an hourly basis for between 4 to 6 hours; Taking 4 to 8 pills at a time during initial days for one to feel the effects.

A few side effects have been associated with intake of piracetam. They are however quite insignificant especially when compared to the benefits associated with intake of the drug. Some of the reported side effects include:

  • Insomnia
  • Slight headaches
  • Tremor
  • Anxiety
  • Nervousness
  • Agitation

It is important to appreciate the co-relation between cognition and mood. Use of nootropics may ‘innocently’ be aimed at achieving enhanced cognition, but if the mood of the partaker, negative results including noradrenergic a mini-type of depression may be reached at. Mood has more influence on cognition that any other factor. This means that more would be achieved by handling issues that have direct impact to someone’s emotions before putting them on medication.

It is therefore important to find a solution that would achieve functions of enhancing cognition and producing feelings of relief and pleasure. This would mean administering a mood-elevating cognitive enhancer like Rolipram (Phosphodiesterase inhibitor).

Tis Better to Gift Than to Receive

Tis Better to Gift Than to Receive

Let us scroll back in our memory to times of being a child. Remember how wonderful it felt to receive presents without feeling obligated to return the favor? Let’s imagine the motive behind the gift, and focus on the intention behind giving.

I had been blessed with a reminder of the empowered concept of giving to others at Burning Man 2010 where this lesson clearly crystallized for me once again.  Perhaps there are many lessons which to RE-learn from children?  As a child, we tend to accept gifts deep gratitude and immense appreciation.  We receive without an obligation to return the favor and simply bask in the enjoyment of the gift at hand.  A feeling of immense happiness sweeps through us as we accept the very gift we had longed for!  =)

Every human being which exists around us has their own needs and desires.  We are completely dependent upon others for survival – most of us shop for food which we did not harvest, grow or prepare ourselves. Without food we are unable to power through our lives as we do.  When you view others as being grossly similar to ourselves, it is easier to have compassion for their needs.  I enjoy sharing abundance with those around me simply because I can!  It’s incredible when the generosity and appreciation is kindly donated from another being without the expectation – this act fills my heart with joy.  Doing something so simple bringing someone so much happiness reminds me how easy life really can be!  Try these three ideas for 7 days – and if you like your simple self, adopt these principles :)

1) Be your honest, true self.

2) Care for one another.

3) Do what feels right.

Sharing gifts without any expectations truly creates happy people and the motive seems to cause some confusion.  It’s humoring to me… and sad, that I’ve been deeply interrogated as to why I am simply giving something away.  As a society, this questioning demonstrates how much honest gifting from the heart, existing without motive for personal gain is lacking in day-to-day life. Let’s get the creative juices flowing – Here are several examples of gifts I’ve shared:

1)      Free book day in front of Wal-Mart: simply gave out books on my shelf, which I am done reading to random people. One woman received a book on challenging relationships w/ marriage and told me how valuable and grateful she was to receive this book.  She & her husband are currently having marital issues and as she walked away I heard her speak with her daughter about how amazing it felt to receive exactly what she needs at this point in her life.  As she walked away, my arm hairs arose with goosebumps – I had felt as if I was the one who benefited from the transaction!

2)      My father Dennis Berry creates small round buttons of art which are created with love and positive intention.  I frequently enjoy receiving a few hundred from him – my mission?  To give them all away!  When I go out for social events with friends or I’m walking the streets, I enjoy giving a complete stranger an amazing piece of art which places a powerful reminder of how easy life can be on the back of the button – “Yes I Can”. It is quite common for people to be confused & to receive a question of my genuine motive.  This generally tends to warm people up and I see them walk lighter as they continue to enjoy their day.  Dad’s artwork are coined “Reminder Art” and his inspiration have touched almost 1,000 people to this day.  In fact, here’s a gift – if you enjoy his artwork and send him a personalized email note, he will send you an extra button along with your purchase.  He’s even willing to send you a free one if you simply pay $1 for shipping – I love you Dad, you are a warm-hearted man!

3)      FRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREE HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGS!  FREE HUGS.  This one is especially popular in San Francisco. I can walk down the street with a sign stating “free hugs” and will receive varying results.  A decent number of people are receptive and incredibly grateful for this gift.  Imagine whether a person is having a challenging or an amazing day, as they walk away they say “Wow, that was unexpected”.  As they continue to interact throughout the day, they are powered by that additional love frequency and walk a bit taller that day, spreading the joy! They will sleep freely that night, knowing the world has a little bit more love than they knew.  What is interesting, is that this may occur more on a subconscious level for most. Hooray for love!

4)      Super excited about this one!  I’ve purchased about 600 CDs over the period of my life. I have recorded these music CDs onto MP3 format onto my computer.  All these bulk CDs no longer serve me – I love music!  I’m looking to set up a day where I just go to the mall and give away free CDs.  It sounds like so much fun to me – to allow a recirculation of music to make 600+ people happy.  They cost me about nothing at this point… and they sit on my shelf!  I’m open to receiving donations for this and I may be able to use some assistance in gifting these CDs and photographing the event. Email me if you’re interested in assisting in anyway =)

At this point I would like to clarify that I am not prompting people to buy gifts for others. It is not necessary to purchase something with a price tag to show appreciation for another human being. I would recommend, right now while these thoughts are fresh in your head, to write down three clever gifts or services to provide to friends, family or strangers. I would like you to enact these three things in the next 30 days.  Let’s see how our moods are then!  I’d invite you to share any wonderful ideas or feedback on this blog and enjoy the process =)

Here is a list of sample ideas:

1)      Offer a stranger at a park a foot race and let them win!

2)      Cook your favorite dish, choose a random office and announced that it is National Nurse Day and deliver.

3)      Bring your favorite cologne/perfume to the mall, and offer all males or females a spray.

4)      Tell 11 people three genuine compliments without any expectations.

5)      Call your parents and tell them how awesome they are for hosting your life.

6)      Volunteer your trade for two hours in a public location.

7)      Hand some spare clothes to an individual in need.

8)      Feed a homeless person at your favorite restaurant & have a conversation.

9)      Write poetry, and read it publicly.

10)   I love free hugs!

Let us do this together and see what kind of world we create when we center our focus around giving rather than receiving: enjoy, it’s a lot of fun!  I’d be honored to hear about your experiences gifting the world – drop me a line and share your wonderful connections with me OR post a comment to the blog so everyone can be inspired! Heading back to default world myself now. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for reading this article. I love & respect you deeply and appreciate the time you took from your day to invest in humanity.

Peace, Love & Hugs,

Dr. Nick

Brain Wave Studies!

Have you ever wondered how your brain functions on a day-to-day basis?  How about at any particular moment, or during a specific behavior?  Recently I’ve been blessed with meeting the neuroscientist & professional programmer Masahiro Kahata who developed the Interactive Brainwave Visual Analyzer (IBVA).  This is portable technology which has capabilities of testing the frequency of brain waves emitted from both lobes of the brain frequencies including alpha, beta, delta, theta, gamma & hyper gamma.  In addition to testing individual lobe output, it’s able to determine coherence communicating between the two hemispheres.

I will share with you some interesting points I have learned about how internal practice has developed utilization of different parts of my brain.  My brain functions rather interesting =) During my first IBVA test in early October 2010, I’ve taught my brain to exist rather consistently in alpha, beta & delta simultaneously.  The actions I was demonstrating during the test were simply sitting – it was later in the evening (about 11pm) and body was physically tired.  My right side of the brain showed significantly more dominance with moderate coherence between the two hemispheres.  If I consciously cared to connect the thoughts, by focusing on my focus, cohesion is more pronounced.

What’s rather curious about these results: I have been so linear & scientific to my life’s studies yet it is my right brain which reacts more vividly in present day.  Simply stated, the right hemisphere is your “creative” side & the left hemisphere is your “linear/logical” side.

My second study was about 1.5 hours during Halloween.  The environment was a lively crowd of spirits dressed with lovely costumes and impressive stereo equipment on to points.  I spent an hour before my tests laying on a sound board where specific combination of frequencies were sent up through the wooden floor vibrating our beings into interesting calming states of consciousness.  After the sound board, I danced ecstatic dance for about an hour with about 15 others and sat on the floor in a circle with 6 people and chanted & held notes (ohm frequency).  This lead up to the experience of my second study.

After all this exciting entertainment, my brain showed significant alpha, beta, delta, theta, gamma & hypergamma waves.  Interesting enough, through quietly sitting I am able to shut off the noise and my waves squelch to relatively flat.  During this time, some points delta & theta would present as sole noise if any – still predominantly right sided.  When I chant or ohm, my cohesion between both hemisphere considerable increases… and all 6 of the tested frequencies exploded with vibrancy.  After seeing how wildly my brain can amplify, I am able to set my brain still within about five seconds by focusing on breath and relaxing.

Masahiro is interested in how my brain functions & is curious to do further exercise tests with me.  The purpose of the experimentation is to develop mental exercises & techniques for shifting consciousness in a particular fashion more at will.  To give a specific example, one who is interested in reaching deeper spiritual connections, how can they train to improve theta functioning.  Or increasing alpha output for someone who has a short attention span (ie. ADHD) to maximize focus.  These forms of brain exercises are utterly intriguing to me!

My personal brain function has been entrained several techniques including the utilization of meditation, yoga, tai-chi, regular exercise (weights or running 2-5/wk for 10 years), listening specific sound frequencies, focusing on love & positive energy, recently EFT, frequent dancing (weekly).  Other variables may be traveling often, meeting new people (mental stimulation) frequently, laughing abundantly, reading books (occasionally), regular desire to learn more.

I hope that you enjoyed hearing about the interesting studies of the mind as I did – and I wish blessings & love to you and your family =)

Vitamins – Beneficial or Destructive?

As I was driving to Santa Clarita from San Francisco last week, I had a very in-depth public conversation with a dear friend who happened to know I’m the most exciting pharmacist alive.  “So what supplements should I take Nick?”  This is a question that makes me smile and laugh depending on the context.  In this case we’re taking a healthy woman with a balanced diet, on occasion exercise with no specific goals other than to be healthy desiring to amp up her health. Energy was a smidgen lower than regular routine and she has a desire to increase her metabolism of fat and maintain her fine skin complexion.

Widespread societal belief is that we must all be taking supplements in order to maximize our health.  “Don’t forget your multivitamin!”  I forgotten mine now for years.  The human body is a perfect magical creation which is blessed with the innate ability to heal itself.  Give it the right tools (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, regular exercise, fresh oxygen…) and set the right intention and the possibilities are endless.  Even on the road I tend to eat high-quality foods including fresh fruits & veggies, Milton’s multi-grain bread which carries a substantial amount of fiber in each slice (goes great with sunflower seed butter (PB substitute) & blueberry preserves or cactus jelly), plenty of assorted nuts, canned or foil wrapped tuna, fresh soy milk, indian boxed meals from Trader Joes… easy, quick hearty meals anywhere!  My belief is the nutrients we need are found in the food that we consume each day when the meals are balanced and complete.  Vitamins may be beneficial to those with poor or unhealthy diets, individuals with specific insufficiencies, and in patients with advanced malabsorption diseases (ie. Crohn’s disease, GI tract surgeries, kidney disease).

Going back to this specific case, my friend is a beautiful young woman in her early 20s with a relatively impressive diet balancing the high-flavored Vietnamese dinners (I miss her home cooked meals – love bun rieu!) with hearty fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and a minor sweet tooth throughout the days.  I’d have to blame her sweet tooth on her incredible personality =)  Her weight lies in the vicinity of 110 pounds and had a recent societal impression she should start taking supplements to live healthier and longer.

My friend takes amazing care of herself, her body is healthy and her spirits are consistently high.  As I continue to assess, her exercise regimen began to slack months prior which is likely one major contributing factor to her recent slump in energy.  It’s amazing when you tell someone who feels complete that they don’t need any additional supplements and they should simply start with getting back to their original workout routine the response – there must be something! Collagen supplements, multivitamins, herbs – the list went on as I had a personal demonstration of how effective direct to consumer advertising is.

My recommendations included Omega-3s to help maintain healthy intake of essential fatty acids er skin in addition to viable precursors (salmon is a great natural source), green tea with added green tea extract (ECGC) to increase metabolization of fat and to increase her exercise activity to that prior to onset of fatigue.  In the instance of persistant fatigue, there is a formulation of wild ginsengs (Chinese, American, Siberian & notoginseng) which I used during pharmacy school which provided a natural boost of energy which lasted throughout the day & night without any hint of stimulation.  This was Earth Drops by Dragon Herbs (888-55-TONIC) and I used about half a dropper in the AM and found it effective for that duration in my life (haven’t used it in over a year myself).

My Experience w/ Multi-Vits:  When I used to take vitamins, ironically these to cause stomach aches and I seemed to feel slightly off.  My thoughts were that vitamins were good for me and therefore it must be an investment in my future!  Many multi-vitamins are superstandard doses and have both water/fat soluble vitamins.  After consuming these monster pills, my urine after appropriate amounts of H2O was regularly released as a flood of bright yellow with a slight burning sensation attached with it (burning is not my normal).  My natural reflex was that of a gagging response as well as it went down.

After eating these Costco bulk vitamins for a year, it’s difficult to say whether my quality of life had improved at all… so if I look at the fact that they made me slightly nauseous and burnt coming out – not for me.  There is something to say about my decision – I eat a full spectrum of hearty goods and am not deficient in any one area.  I even eat random trace minerals in the form of Himalayan rock salt almost daily.

If my diet was not up to par, I would currently reconsider a lower-dose multi-vitamin which has better absorption in the body.  Something of higher quality, better products going into the vitamin such as a Standard Process Catalyn for example (not promoting this!).  Personally, I would look for a liquid formulation – even if the taste wasn’t up to par, liquid solutions are more readily absorbed into the body.  Plus, you can take lower liquid amounts than recommended if the liquid is above desired concentration and you will get the slight vitamin increases the body desires while allowing your product to last more doses.  Hooray on both counts!  Keep in mind, there are fat-soluble & water-soluble vitamins.  The extra water-soluble vitamins will be excreted out of the body (hello neon yellow urine!) while the fat-soluble will get stored in the fat cells and are much more difficult for the body to eliminate.

Your body is a pretty radical piece of machinery complete with biochemical-electrical pathways.  Once you are in tune with your system, it will tell you through symptoms that it needs something… or something needs to go.  When you love & respect your body, it will love & respect you back!  So remember, eat a balanced diet, exercise and take care of your health.  And if you don’t, then consider additional supplementation =)

In Service with Love,

Dr. Nick

Three Cheers for Abundance

Abundance is a kind of feeling that spreads warm joy throughout the hearts of all whom share in its gift. The universe provides a finite amount of resources throughout the planet in an infinite type of manner. Let’s freeze frame a reality back to Thanksgiving or any other holiday party chock full with family and friends. Imagine it’s the afternoon while baking a warm apple pie or creating your masterful stuffing to share with all your closest relations. We feel pride as we set the timer on the oven after combining all the freshest most natural ingredients. Taste the aromas coming into your nose, breathing out through your mouth all the fresh cinnamon tingling your taste buds. The scents warmed the air of your little kitchen underneath a blessed roof and a cold winter. You may enjoy sipping a fresh Chardonnay with a loved one, as you each tap dance through the kitchen and give thanks to the wealths you have been graced with. The timer ends and the adventure continues!

Picture your drive over. The gas tank is full and you arrive at your relatives with over three quarters of a tank. There is using music playing in the background, warmth in the halls and in the hearts all of whom you speak. As you enter the kitchen, there are three types of hot apple pies ready to be served, and dinner hasn’t even began! See the texture of the sliced honey-glazed ham, turkey fresh out of the oven, fresh bed of ground cranberries & homemade orange syrup drizzled on each morsel. Fresh salad greens, sliced fruits, vegetable appetizers in organic vinaigrette dips, candied almond bowls swirl each of your savory sensors. As your baby niece wraps her arms around your chest, you feed her a whopping bite of fresh marshmallowed ambrosia. She understands gratitude and smiles!

Warm embraces, fresh conversation, love and forgiveness, time shared between family – all of these concepts are very real and full of luscious experience. The idea we are painting here is the simplicity a happy moment can portray when you share time with the people you love. Every person in the tribe contributes a little bit of love and appreciation for the others around them, and each person lovingly shares the gifts that they have been blessed with. Every person has a varying degrees of blessings – in the whole, we have created a perfect situation of abundance.

Let’s take this a step further. How blessed are you with abundance? Do you own a vehicle? Do you have a roof over your head? Does your water fountain overflow with life-giving energy? Does a hot shower wake you up? A family who appreciates you? How about a job you enjoy? A lover to go home to? Refrigerator full of food? Friends surrounding your every visit? Are you free to travel? Do you live the life you wish to live? Give thanks!

In my personal life, I find it heartwarming to share the gifts which I’ve been blessed with in my surrounding communities & beyond. Some evenings when I was out of town at pharmaceutical conferences, I would walk the streets and find a homeless person. When I was asked for money, I invited them to dinner with me where I invested multiple hours of my time sitting and listening to their story while feeding them. In some cases, people asked me for feedback on how to improve their situation which may have made an impact or not long-term.

It’s amazing what we can do for others when we are blessed with a position of wealth and abundance above their own… it’s incredible when you learn how meaningful it is to the person who provides the gift. Looking for something to do with your free time? Try going to busy city, or walking around your corner store, pick up a random stranger and invite them out for a picnic or lunch on you. It’s easy, simple, exciting and may teach you something about yourself that you may have not known: You are a gift to mankind and to society and are appreciated by others!

Here’s some fun ideas you can get involved and spread your abundance!

1) Donate all those unused toiletries (facial creams, perfumes, lotions, etc.) to your local homeless shelter *as per local laws allow of course* – sure to bring smiles to someone’s face =)

2) During your next baking sessions, you can knock on your neighbor’s doors and tell them you baked so many cookies, you felt compelled to make sure everyone in their family gets one!

3) Offer some of your time at a local senior center. Pick an elder and listen to them! You have an abundance of time left in your life, enjoy their stories.

4) Old books on the shelf – not going to read? Hand them out… anywhere.

5) Do you grow food in your garden – don’t let it spoil, share it with your child’s school staff. They’re overworked and would love some recognition!

6) Have a cause you’re really passionate about? See how you can get involved. Look at their websites, contact them and see what tools or skills you can provide outside of monetary means.

7) Purchase bulk foods, walk around a congested area and gift people these nutrient-dense luxuries because you have an abundance!

See how abundant you are? It’s easy to pass joy & feel happiness when your cup over-runith. My challenge is to try your favorite two ideas above – “just for the holiday sake!” For those feeling really adventurous – make one up, and share it with all of us!

This month I’m going to donate some time to a cause. Any suggestions? I’m part ears =)
